Covering Earlwood and the inner south-west.
Solid interwar brick, systems getting on, and more repair-or-replace calls than anywhere nearby.

Earlwood is one of those suburbs where the houses outlast everything put in them. The interwar brick bungalows here are solid as anything, and a lot of them are on their second or third air conditioner. We've worked these streets for decades - the hilly blocks, the double brick that holds heat into the night, the rooflines that take ducted better than people expect.

30+ Years

The stock is classic interwar Sydney: 1920s to 1940s double brick and brick bungalows, tiled roofs, decent ceiling heights, on hilly streets above the Cooks River. Plenty of homes carry ducted systems from the 2000s now ageing out, and the semis and smaller places run splits.

About Us

Air Conditioning in Earlwood

After air conditioning in Earlwood? Jay's Air has been doing it since 1991. A typical 3-4 bedroom Earlwood brick home takes a 10 to 12.5kW ducted system at $7,000 to $11,000. A 2.5kW split for a bedroom is $1,800 to $2,100, a 5kW for the living room $2,500 to $3,000. Fault-finding is $250 plus GST with the fix quoted before we start. 4.8 stars from 280+ reviews.

The big Earlwood question is repair or replace, because so many systems here are 15-plus years old. The honest rule: a repair over $600 on a system past 15 years is money better spent on a new one, especially the old R22 units where the gas alone is $265 a kilo.

Double brick holds the heat - and changes the maths

Earlwood's double brick does something people don't expect: it soaks up the day's heat and gives it back all evening. That's why the house still feels hot at 9pm when outside has cooled off. It means systems here need to run later into the night, sizing should err a touch bigger, and a struggling unit shows up first in the evenings. If your bedroom won't cool before midnight, that's the wall heat winning.

Ducted replacements are the bread and butter - the duct runs from the 2000s installs usually reuse fine, which keeps the cost down. Check your numbers with the sizing calculator and the pricing guide before anyone quotes.

Air Conditioning Repairs in Earlwood

Most of the air conditioning repairs Earlwood calls us for belong to ageing systems: capacitors gone on hot days, fan motors squealing, drains blocked and leaking down walls, and older units low on gas. Common fixes run $120 to $500, most done same visit, parts warrantied 12 months. Ben does the diagnostics and the quote comes before the work, every time.

Why Earlwood Calls Jay's

Because we give the straight answer on old systems. If it's worth fixing we fix it, if it isn't we say so and show you both numbers. No drama, no upsell.

Mick Daly runs the ducted replacements and has since 2009. Noah Hall does the splits, and split system installation Earlwood semis and bungalows ask for keeps him busy here. Ben handles the diagnostics himself.

Ducted replacement in a 1930s bungalow

Problem

1930s double brick bungalow with a 2004 R22 ducted system - compressor on the way out and a regas quote that made no sense at $265 a kilo.

Diagnosis

Mick swapped it for a 12.5kW Actron inverter with 4 zones, reusing the sound duct runs. Done in two days, $9,500 fixed, lifetime workmanship warranty, and the evening cooling problem went with the old unit.

Split for a brick semi

Problem

Brick semi near the shops, main bedroom unbearable on summer nights with the wall heat, no cooling anywhere in the house.

Diagnosis

Noah fitted a 2.5kW Panasonic high on the bedroom wall, pipe run down the back out of sight. Half a day, $1,950, and sized with the double brick evening load in mind.

Mitsubishi split dead on a 39 degree day

Problem

Mitsubishi split humming but not cooling on one of January's worst days, elderly owner home alone.

Diagnosis

Ben got there that afternoon. Failed capacitor - tested, swapped, run current checked. $165 and cold air back within the hour of arriving.

Air Conditioning Earlwood - Common Questions

FAQs

For a typical 3-4 bedroom Earlwood brick home, $7,000 to $11,000 for a 10 to 12.5kW system. Replacing a 2000s system usually costs less because the duct runs get reused. Fixed quote before any work.

Double brick. It soaks up heat all day and releases it all evening, so the house fights you until late. Systems here should be sized a touch bigger and expected to run into the night on hot days.

Repairs over $600 on a system past 15 years are money better put toward a new one – and old R22 units make the call easy, with the gas at $265 a kilo when you can get it. We quote both ways and tell you straight.

Air Conditioning Advice for Earlwood Homeowners

Don't run the old R22 unit into the ground. Once it leaks you're paying premium money for discontinued gas on borrowed time. Replace on your schedule, not a heatwave's.

On the hilly blocks, outdoor unit placement matters for noise - sound carries downhill to the neighbours. We pick the spot during the quote so nobody's knocking on your door in February.
