Air con running but the room's still warm? Nine times out of ten it's one of these. Low refrigerant from a leak. A blocked filter or a dirty coil choking the airflow. A dead capacitor so the compressor won't kick in. Or a tired PC board. Some of it you can check yourself in two minutes. The rest needs a tech with gauges.

Before You Book a Service
Check the setting
Sounds obvious, but make sure it's on Cool, not Fan or Auto, and the temp's set lower than the room. A lot of 'broken' units are just on the wrong mode.
Wash the filter
Pop the front off the indoor unit, pull the filters, give them a rinse under the tap and let them dry. A choked filter is the single most common reason for weak cold air. Do this every couple of months and you'll save yourself a call-out.
Restart it properly
Turn it off at the isolator switch by the outdoor unit, wait a couple of minutes, switch it back on. Clears a lot of minor electronic faults.
Check the airflow
Make sure nothing's blocking the outdoor unit, no leaves, no junk piled against it, and that your vents inside are open. The outdoor unit needs to breathe to dump the heat.
Still Not Cooling After the Basics?
If it's still blowing warm after all that, it's past the DIY stage. That's a gas, electrical or board issue, and you'll want a tech with gauges on it. We do split system repairs and ducted repairs right across Sydney.

What's Actually Gone Wrong
Here's what we find when a unit's not cooling, roughly most common first, and what each one costs to sort. If the unit's frozen over or leaking water, that ties in with cooling too. We've got separate pages on ice on the unit and water leaks if that's what you're seeing.
Blocked filter or dirty coil
Airflow’s everything. Packed filters or a filthy indoor coil and the system can’t move cold air, even though it’s working hard. Filters you wash yourself. A proper chemical coil clean runs about $200 to $300.
Low on gas (refrigerant leak)
If your unit’s low on gas, it’s leaked. Air con is a sealed system, it doesn’t use gas up like a car. So topping it up without finding the leak just buys you a few weeks. We pressure test, find the leak, fix it, then regas. A straight top-up’s often $200 to $350 depending on the gas and how flat it is. If there’s a leak to find and repair, it’s more, and we’ll quote it.
Failed capacitor
The capacitor’s what kicks the compressor into life. When it goes, the fan often still spins but you get no cold air. It’s a cheap, quick fix, usually around $150 to $180 fitted, and it’s one of the most common faults we see.
Fan motor or PC board
If the indoor or outdoor fan isn’t spinning properly, cooling drops off. A replacement fan motor’s usually $300 to $500 fitted. The PC board’s the brain, and when it plays up you get random faults or nothing at all. Boards run $400 to $700 depending on the unit. Sometimes a repair beats a full board swap, and we’ll tell you which way’s the smarter spend.
When to Stop Using the System
If it's run for an hour and the room hasn't moved a degree, switch it off. Running a struggling unit flat out doesn't cool the room, it just cooks the parts. If it's iced up, frozen pipes or ice on the outdoor unit, turn it off and let it thaw before anyone touches it. Running it iced is how compressors die, and the compressor's the expensive bit. And if you ever smell burning, switch it off at the breaker and give us a call straight away.

Daikin split, blowing warm – Marrickville. 5kW Daikin split in a townhouse, running but no cold air. Put the gauges on and it was low. Found a weeping flare on the outdoor unit, re-flared the join, pressure tested it, regassed with R32. Cooling back to full that afternoon. $340.
Mitsubishi ducted, fan running no cold air – Castle Hill. Ducted system, indoor fan going but warm air out the vents. Compressor capacitor had failed. Swapped it, tested the run current, had cold air back in twenty minutes. $160. Classic cheap fix that people assume is a whole new system.
Fujitsu split, weak cooling – Bankstown. 7.1kW Fujitsu in a shopfront, barely any cold air. Filters were packed solid and the indoor coil was caked. Pulled it down, chem cleaned the coil, washed the filters out. Airflow and cooling back to where it should be, no parts needed. $280.

Usually one of four things. Low refrigerant from a leak, a blocked filter or dirty coil, a failed capacitor, or a faulty PC board. We diagnose it properly before quoting, so you’re not paying us to guess.
You can sort the easy stuff. Wash the filters, clear the vents and the outdoor unit, set it to Cool below room temp, and restart it at the isolator. If it’s still warm after that, it’s a gas, electrical or board fault and needs a tech with gauges.
