Ducted Repairs

Ducted System Playing Up?

We Fix the Whole System, Not Just the Box.

Weak airflow from every vent, warm air, short cycling or dead zones? With ducted it is usually airflow before anything else. A packed return air filter, a leaking duct joint, dirty coils or a failed zone motor. Then gas, then boards. A service call to find the fault is $250 plus GST and we quote the fix before we start.

Common ducted fixes: drain clear $120 to $150, zone motor around $300 to $420, coil clean $200 to $300, gas top-up $200 to $350, fan motor $300 to $500. Start with not cooling or high power bills if you want to read up first.

We have been doing ducted air conditioning repairs Sydney wide since 1991. Family run, our own blokes not subbies, 4.8 stars from 280+ reviews. Licensed (NSW 273312C), ARCtick certified (AU13058).

Mick Daly has run our bigger ducted work since 2009. We test the whole system, return air to the furthest vent, and show you the numbers before we quote. See the pricing guide for what things cost.

Sydney Ducted Struggles

Sydney housing is tough on ducted gear. Long duct runs in older brick homes were sized for the way houses were used in the 90s, not for today. Roof cavities hit 60 degrees in summer, which cooks flexi duct and dries out joints. Two-storey places fight stack heat upstairs. And builder-grade systems from the estate boom around Kellyville, Stanhope Gardens and Edmondson Park are now hitting the 15 to 20 year mark, which is when zone motors, boards and compressors start letting go. None of that means a new system. Most of it is fixable, and we will tell you straight which side of the line yours is on.

Short Cycling System

On for three minutes, off for two, on repeat. A protection response, usually pressure or gas related.

High Electricity Bills

A struggling system runs longer for the same cooling. Dirty coils and filters are the usual culprits.

Zones Not Responding

Usually a failed zone motor or controller fault, around $300 to $420 to put right.

Quick Checks Before Calling (5 Minutes Max)

  • Return air filter. Usually a big grille in the hallway ceiling. Black with dust? Wash it and let it dry
  • All vents open. Someone shut the spare room vent years ago and the system has been fighting itself since
  • Controller set right. Cool mode, sensible temp, no timer running
  • Breaker in the switchboard and isolator by the outdoor unit both on

Five minutes, costs nothing, and saves a fair few call-outs.

DIAGNOSTIC PROCESS

How We Diagnose Ducted Air Conditioning Faults

We test the full system, not just the unit, to find the real cause:

  • 00

    Static Pressure Air Flow Test

Every ducted fault starts here. High static pressure means the system is starving for air.

    00

    Temperature Drop Test

Around 10 degrees between return and supply air is healthy. One degree means an airflow or gas problem.

    00

    Refrigerant Pressures

Gauges tell the truth. Low suction points to a leak, high head pressure points to dirty coils.

    00

    Electrical Draw

A compressor pulling well under its rated amps is on the way out. We test under real load.

    00

    Duct Integrity

We check the duct runs and joints in the roof. Leaking joints dump your cold air into the ceiling.

Weak Airflow in Stanhope Gardens

Problem

14kW Panasonic ducted, barely a whisper from any vent upstairs.

Diagnosis

Running All Day, No Cold Air in Bexley

Problem

12.5kW Actron ducted running flat out, house still warm, bills up.

Diagnosis

Outdoor coils caked in grime and the return grille half blocked. Chemical coil clean and cleared the return. Temp drop back to where it should be. $520.

Short Cycling in Edmondson Park

Problem

10kW Daikin ducted starting, running three minutes, cutting out again.

Diagnosis

Low pressure protection from a gas leak at a flare on the outdoor unit. Fixed the flare, pressure tested, regassed with R410a. Ran it under load to confirm. $620.

Why Most Ducted Systems Get Misdiagnosed

Around 80% of the "compressor failed" calls we get turn out to be dirty coils or a blocked return. That is a few hundred dollars, not ten grand. It is why we test the whole system before quoting anything. If someone has quoted you a new compressor, get a second opinion before you spend big. Ducted aircon repairs are usually cheaper than people fear.

Our air conditioning repairs service covers all of Sydney.

When Replacement Beats Repair

Fifteen plus years old with multiple faults is upgrade territory. A new ducted system runs $7,000 to $10,000 for 10kW and $9,500 to $12,500 for 16kW, which often beats years of compressor repairs on a system running old R22 gas.

Check the pricing and costs guide and the sizing calculator if you are weighing it up. We will give you the honest call either way.

FAQS

Ducted Repair Questions

FAQS

Around 80% of the time it is dirty outdoor coils or a blocked return air filter, not a failed compressor. Gas leaks come next. More on our not cooling page.

A struggling system runs longer for the same cooling. Dirty filters and coils, low gas or duct leaks are the usual reasons. A $250 service often pays for itself in one summer. See our high power bills page.

On for a couple of minutes, off, then on again. It is the system protecting itself, usually a pressure or gas fault, sometimes an oversized unit. We find which one and quote the fix before we start.

A service call is $250 plus GST and covers attendance and diagnosis. Our Gold service is $250 and Platinum is $350. The full list is on the pricing page.

Low gas or choked airflow nine times out of ten. Never chip the ice off. Switch to fan mode to thaw it and get it looked at. More on our ice on the unit page.

Yeah, all of them. We carry common Daikin and Actron parts and use genuine gear with a 12 month parts warranty. See our Daikin repairs page.

Almost always duct design, not the unit. Undersized return grilles, too many flexi bends or crushed duct in the roof. We test static pressure and show you where the air is going.

Depends on the fault. Icing up, odd noises or water inside? Switch it off, running it can turn a cheap fix into a dead compressor. If it is just weak, fan mode is safe.
