MHI Showing an Error or Not Cooling?
We'll Fix It Properly.
Got a Mitsubishi Heavy Industries unit playing up? Short version: a service call to find the fault is $250 plus GST, we quote the fix before we touch it, and most common MHI faults get sorted same visit. We've repaired MHI gear across Sydney since 1991. 4.8 stars from 280+ reviews.
Quick heads-up: MHI is not the same company as Mitsubishi Electric. Both are Japanese, both say Mitsubishi, but the parts and procedures are different - check the badge on your outdoor unit. MHI gear like the Bronte, Avanti and SRK series is quiet, tough and worth repairing. Strong heating performance too, which matters in Sydney winters.

What We See in
Sydney MHI Systems
Extreme Heat
Sydney summers push MHI condensers hard. Capacitors and fan motors cop the worst of it on 40 degree runs.
Poor Airflow
Packed filters and dirty coils choke the indoor unit. Half the weak-cooling MHI units we see just need a proper clean.
Coastal Corrosion
Salt air eats outdoor coils and cabinets near the water. Corroded coils end up leaking gas.
Heavy Usage
MHI units that run all day, every day wear parts early. Boards and sensors usually go first.

Common MHI Faults We Fix
Error codes. MHI uses numeric codes on the display, or LED flash patterns on units without one. E1 is a room temperature sensor, E3 an outdoor air sensor, E6 a communication error between indoor and outdoor, P8 refrigerant pressure protection. A code that comes back after a restart is real - note it down.
Communication faults (E6). More often a wiring issue than a dead board - a loose or corroded connection in the interconnect cable. We test the wiring before anyone pays for a board.
Low gas. Newer MHI systems run R32, older ones R410A. A leak shows up as weak cooling or ice on the coil. We pressure test, find the leak, fix it, regas. Top-ups run $200 to $350.
Fan motors. Bearing wear after 8 to 12 years, squealing then seizure. $300 to $500 fitted.
Ducted extras. The FDT and FDUM ducted series add zone damper motors and pressure sensors into the mix. If some zones get no airflow, that's often the damper system rather than the refrigeration circuit. We diagnose both.
E1 - room temperature sensor. The unit gets garbage readings and cycles strangely. Sensor replacement around $250 to $300 fitted.
E3 - outdoor air sensor. Same story on the outdoor side. Around $250 to $300.
E6 - communication error. Indoor and outdoor not talking - more often corroded interconnect wiring than a dead board. Restart first, and if it returns we test the wiring before anyone pays for a board. $180 to $400.
P8 - refrigerant pressure protection. The system has protected itself over a pressure problem, commonly low gas from a leak. Leak repair plus regas, top-ups $200 to $350.
MHI codes vary by series, and units without a display flash the code through the LEDs instead - count the flashes. Read us the code or pattern on (02) 9820 4500 and we'll tell you the likely fault and cost before we book the visit.
Quick MHI Checks First
Restart it at the isolator next to the outdoor unit - off for five minutes, back on. That clears one-off glitches. Wash the filters. Check the remote mode is right. If there's no display, watch the LEDs: the flash count is the fault code. If the same code or flash pattern returns after a restart, it's a real fault - tell us the code when you call and we'll usually know the likely culprit before we arrive.

How We Diagnose MHI Faults
We don't rely on guesswork, and we don't swap parts until something works. We test the system properly and look at the fault as a whole - operating pressures, temperatures, electrical readings and airflow - then fix the actual cause. Here's how a MHI diagnosis runs:
00
Airflow
Filters, coils and fans first. Choked airflow mimics low gas and trips protection codes.
00
Electrical
Boards, capacitors and sensors tested properly, not guessed at. MHI codes point us to the right circuit.
00
Refrigerant
Gauges on, pressures read. If it's low it's leaked, so we find the leak before any regas.

How Long Repairs Take

Diagnosis
One visit. Gauges, electrical checks and a straight answer with a fixed quote.
Simple Fixes
Capacitors, sensors, drain clears and regas jobs are usually done the same visit.
Moderate Repairs
Fan motors and boards depend on parts. Common MHI parts we can usually get within the week.
Summer Peak Season
We won't promise what we can't deliver in a heatwave, but genuine no-cooling jobs get priority. Call early in the day.

MHI Repair
Cost Guide
Every job is quoted before we start. The $250 plus GST service call covers a proper diagnosis and a straight answer. Full pricing on our pricing page.

Why We Don't Cut Corners
There's a reason MHI owners call us back. We don't regas a leaking system and drive off. We don't swap parts on a hunch and bill you for the experiment. And we don't talk you into a new system when a $300 repair will do.
Every MHI repair starts with a proper diagnosis. Pressures, electricals, airflow, the lot. You get the actual fault and a fixed quote before we touch a spanner. If the maths says repair, we repair it with genuine parts and 12 month warranty on those parts, plus our lifetime workmanship guarantee. If the maths says replace, we'll show you why and quote both ways.
That's how a family business holds a 4.8 star rating across 280+ reviews after 35 years. No shortcuts, no surprises, no subbies.
Repair or Replace Your MHI?
MHI build quality means repair is usually the right call. Under 10 years old with a sensor, fan, wiring or gas fault? Fix it. Past 12 to 15 years with a dead compressor, or an old R22 unit? Replacement money is better spent - and we'll give you both numbers on the spot so you can decide with real figures.

What Happens on a Repair Visit
We start with proper diagnosis so we can identify the fault before recommending any repair. That includes checking operation, airflow, drainage, electrical readings, and the way the MHI system behaves under load.
Once the issue is confirmed, we explain the problem clearly, tell you what needs to change, and give you clear pricing before work begins. If the repair can be completed on the spot, we do it. If parts are required, we organise the next step quickly and keep it straightforward.

Plain English Explanation
We tell you what we found in plain English, not jargon.
00
Root Cause Found
We chase the cause, not the symptom, so the same fault doesn't come back next month.

No. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Mitsubishi Electric are separate companies with different parts and different service procedures. Check the badge on your outdoor unit – we repair both.
E6 is a communication error between the indoor and outdoor units. It’s often a wiring fault rather than a failed board, which makes it a cheaper fix than most people fear. We test the wiring first.
Yes. Bronte, Avanti and SRK splits plus the FDT, FDUM and FDTC ducted and cassette ranges, residential and light commercial.
Watch the LEDs on the indoor unit – the fault is communicated as a flash pattern. Count the flashes and the pauses and tell us when you call. That count maps to a fault code.
Usually yes. MHI compressors are long-lived and most faults are sensors, fans, wiring or gas – all repairable at sensible money. We’ll tell you straight when replacement is the smarter spend.
