System Performance Testing
We run the system through all modes and listen for where and when the noise starts. Startup, steady running and shutdown each tell a different story.

What That Noise From Your
Air Conditioner Is Telling You
A noisy air con is telling you what's wrong, you just need the translation. A rattle is usually a loose panel or debris. Grinding means fan motor bearings on the way out. Squealing points to a belt or motor. Gurgling is refrigerant or a drain problem. And a click that never gets the unit going is usually a capacitor or relay.
Some of those are a two minute fix. Some will kill the unit if you ignore them. The trick is knowing which is which, and that's what we do.
A service call to diagnose the noise is $250 plus GST, and we quote any fix before we start. Common repairs: a capacitor is $150 to $180 fitted, a fan motor $300 to $500 fitted. We've been sorting noisy air cons across Sydney since 1991, family run, 4.8 stars from 280+ reviews. Full prices are on our pricing page.
One sound skips the queue. A loud bang or screech followed by a burning smell means off at the breaker, then give us a bell.

Check controller settings
Some noises are just a mode change. Defrost cycles gurgle and hiss for a few minutes in winter, and that's normal. Check the unit isn't mid-defrost before you worry.
Restart the system
Off at the isolator, wait two minutes, back on. If the noise was a one-off, a debris strike or a sticky relay, a restart often clears it.
Clean the filter
A filter packed with dust makes the fan work harder and louder. Pull the filters out, rinse them under the tap, let them dry and refit.
Check airflow and vents
Check nothing's sitting against the outdoor unit and the vents inside are open. Restricted airflow makes any system noisier.
Clicking and Gurgling Sounds
Clicking: a single click at startup and shutdown is just the relay doing its job. Constant clicking while running, or clicking with no start, usually means a failing relay or a worn capacitor. A capacitor is a quick fix at $150 to $180 fitted. If the unit clicks but never starts, our not turning on page walks through what to check.
Gurgling: a steady gurgle from the indoor unit often means a partly blocked condensate drain, and bubbling in the pipes can point to refrigerant trouble. A drain clear is $120 to $150, and drain trouble travels with water leaks, see our leaking water page. If the gurgle comes with weak cooling, gas is the suspect, and a top-up with a proper leak check runs $200 to $350.

Air Conditioner Noises Explained
Match the sound to the cause below, most common first. Tell us which one you're hearing when you book on (02) 9820 4500 and we'll turn up prepared.
Usually a loose panel, a missing screw or debris like leaves and twigs in the outdoor unit. Sometimes it’s the fan blade clipping something. Cheap to fix, annoying to live with, and it gets worse if the vibration works other parts loose.
From the outdoor unit this usually means worn compressor mounts or a part that’s come adrift inside. Switch it off. A loose part bouncing around the compressor compartment does real damage fast. We quote the fix once we’ve opened it up.
A belt or motor sound. A brief squeal at startup that fades can be normal on older units, but a constant squeal or a metal-on-metal screech means a motor bearing on the way to seizing. A replacement fan motor runs $300 to $500 fitted.
Hissing during a winter defrost is normal for a few minutes. Constant hissing or bubbling can mean refrigerant escaping, and low gas means weak cooling next. A top-up with a proper leak check is $200 to $350. If the cooling’s already dropped off, see our not cooling page.
Turn It Off Immediately If You Hear These
Some sounds mean shut it down now, not at the end of the day:
Running a system with a loose or seizing part turns a few hundred dollars of repair into a dead compressor, and the compressor is the expensive bit. Off at the isolator, then call us on (02) 9820 4500. If it can't wait, our emergency repairs page covers what to do in the meantime.

How We Diagnose the Issue
Noise diagnosis is about finding the source, not just hearing the sound. Here's how we run it.
00
System Performance Testing
We run the system through all modes and listen for where and when the noise starts. Startup, steady running and shutdown each tell a different story.
00
Electrical Testing & Fault Tracing
Relays, capacitors and contactors all click and buzz when they're failing. We test them instead of guessing.
00
Refrigerant Pressure Check
Hissing and bubbling get the gauges. Pressures tell us straight away if refrigerant's the problem and where it's getting out.
00
Airflow & System Balance Assessment
Whistling and roaring are usually air forced through somewhere too small. We check filters, ducts and vents end to end.
00
Component Inspection
Panels off, we check fan blades, bearings, mounts and the compressor. The fix gets quoted before we touch anything.
How Regular Servicing Prevents Noise
Most of the noisy air conditioners we see didn’t get noisy overnight. Bearings dry out, panels work loose, filters choke up and drains clog slowly, and the noise builds until you can’t ignore it. An annual service catches all of that early.
Our Gold service at $250 covers the lot: filters cleaned, panels checked and tightened, drain flushed, electricals tested and gas pressures checked. For most homes that’s the difference between a quiet system and a $400 repair down the track. Service plans are on the pricing page.
If the unit’s already loud, book the service call instead. An air conditioner making noise needs diagnosis first, not a filter clean.
Get Your Cooling Back Fast
A noisy air conditioner rarely fixes itself, and the cheap faults become dear ones if the vibration spreads. Jay's Air has been diagnosing air conditioner noises across Sydney since 1991. Family run, our own blokes not subbies, fixed pricing quoted before we start. Licensed (NSW 273312C), ARCtick certified (AU13058), 4.8 stars from 280+ reviews. Give us a bell on (02) 9820 4500, Monday to Friday 7am to 5pm, Saturdays by arrangement.

A steady hum and a single click at startup and shutdown are normal. So is a few minutes of gurgling and hissing during a winter defrost cycle. Rattles, bangs, squeals, grinding and constant clicking are not normal, they’re early warnings worth acting on.
A single soft thump can just be the ductwork flexing as air pressure comes up. A hard metallic bang points to compressor mounts or a part that’s come loose in the outdoor unit. If the bang is new or getting louder, switch it off and get it looked at.
Maybe, but don’t start there. Hissing during defrost is normal. Constant hissing can mean refrigerant escaping, and if gas is low it’s leaked, so a top-up without finding the leak only buys you a few weeks. We pressure test, find the leak, fix it, then regas. Top-ups run $200 to $350.
Yes, and sooner is cheaper. A rattle today is a loose panel. In three months it’s a worn bearing, and a seized motor can take the compressor with it. A $250 service call now usually beats a $500 fan motor later.
The service call to find the cause is $250 plus GST. From there, loose panels and debris are quick and cheap, a capacitor is $150 to $180 fitted, and a fan motor is $300 to $500 fitted. We quote before we start, and most fixes happen the same visit.
