The Straight Answer
Annual for most systems, twice a year for heavy use - and October beats January every time.
How often should you service your air conditioner? Once a year minimum, ideally in spring before the season you flog it. Run it year-round for heating and cooling? Twice a year is the honest answer. The systems we service annually reach 15-plus years; the ones we meet for the first time when they die make 8 to 10. That gap is the whole argument. Since 1991, 4.8 stars from 280+ reviews.
What you can do yourself: wash the filters every couple of months in heavy use, and keep the outdoor unit clear of leaves and garden creep. What needs a licensed tech: refrigerant checks, electrical testing, coil cleaning with proper chemicals. The split matters - filter washing is free DIY, gas handling is illegal without an ARCtick licence.

Service Options and Prices
Pick the level that matches your system and how hard it works.

Filter service - $150
Filters cleaned, quick visual check of the system. The minimum that keeps a lightly used split healthy between proper services.
Standard service - $250
The proper annual go-over: refrigerant pressures, electrical checks, capacitor condition, drains cleared, coils inspected. This is the one that catches January breakdowns in October.
Full diagnostic service - $350
A 30-minute run cycle with full digital readings - superheat, subcooling, performance report. The full physical for older systems or anything acting up.
The cost of skipping it
Dirty coils add up to 20 percent to running costs, slow gas leaks cook compressors, and the $165 capacitor nobody caught becomes a heatwave emergency. Skipping the service is the expensive option.
What a Real Service Includes
A proper service is not a bloke rinsing a filter and leaving in 15 minutes. It covers the indoor coil, filters, condensate drain, fan bearings, the outdoor coil, refrigerant pressures, electrical connections and capacitor condition - with the readings to prove it. On ducted systems add zone dampers, duct condition and return air.
The timing matters as much as the content: book in spring. Every weak part announces itself under test in October, when parts are days away and the calendar is open. In January you are competing with every broken system in Sydney. Prices on the pricing guide.

What's Actually Gone Wrong
The servicing questions we get most, answered straight.
Annually minimum – ducted has more to check than a split: zone dampers, duct runs, return air. Heavy year-round use earns a pre-summer and pre-winter visit.
You can wash filters and keep the outdoor unit clear – do both. Anything involving refrigerant legally requires an ARCtick licence, and coil cleaning needs proper chemicals. The rest is tech work.
Yes – and it can protect the manufacturer warranty, which often expects maintenance records. A new system serviced from year one is the 15-year system.
Weak airflow, musty smell, longer run times, higher bills, ice on the pipes, water drips. Any of those means book now rather than before summer.
Why October Beats January
Every summer the same story plays out: the first 40 degree week arrives, every tired capacitor and low-gas system in Sydney fails the same weekend, and wait lists blow out exactly when families need cooling most. A spring service finds those weak parts when they are a $150 to $350 fix on a quiet calendar. It is the single highest-value habit an aircon owner can have.

Annually at minimum, before summer. Twice a year if it runs year-round for heating and cooling. Serviced systems last 15-plus years; neglected ones manage 8 to 10.
Our levels: $150 filter service, $250 standard service with refrigerant and electrical checks, $350 full diagnostic with superheat and subcooling readings and a written report.
A proper split service runs 45 to 90 minutes, ducted 1.5 to 3 hours. Be wary of 30-minute specials – a real service physically cannot happen that fast.
We tell you what it is, what it costs, and whether it is urgent – quoted before anything is touched. Most small faults found at service time are fixed on the same visit.

Don’t run it hard for days on end. A struggling unit just cooks its own parts, and if it’s iced up it can kill the compressor. Switch it off, run through the quick checks, and book it in if it’s still warm.
