At minimum once a year, before the season you use it most. If you run your system year-round, twice a year is better. A proper service cleans the indoor coil, clears the condensate drain, checks refrigerant pressures, and catches developing faults before they cause a breakdown.

Check the filter first (clean or replace if dirty), confirm the outdoor unit has clear airflow, and make sure the set temperature is lower than the room temperature. If those are fine and the system is still not cooling, the likely causes are low refrigerant from a leak, a failing capacitor, or a dirty indoor coil. A rough starting point is 1kW of cooling capacity per 10m2 of floor space in a well-insulated room. Ceiling height, insulation, window orientation, and direct sun all affect the real figure. An undersized system runs constantly and never reaches temperature; an oversized system short-cycles and does not dehumidify properly. A standard single split system installation takes 3-6 hours for an experienced team. Ducted system installation is a larger project – typically 1-3 days depending on the size of the home and the complexity of the ductwork. We provide a clear timeframe at the time of quoting.

It depends on the age, the fault, and the repair cost relative to a new system. As a general guide: if the repair costs more than 40-50% of a comparable new unit and the system is over 10 years old, replacement usually makes more economic sense over a 5-year horizon. We always give an honest assessment and do not push replacements when a repair will give years of reliable service.

Common signs are reduced cooling even though the compressor is running, the indoor coil icing up, and longer run times to reach set temperature. The only way to confirm is with a manifold gauge pressure check. Low refrigerant always means there is a leak – topping up without finding and fixing it is a waste of money. We check refrigerant pressures and superheat/subcooling measurements on every refrigerant call using a Testo 550i digital manifold.

Yes – treat it as urgent. A leaking indoor unit can cause water damage to ceilings, walls, and electrical areas quickly. The most common cause is a blocked condensate drain, which is a straightforward fix. It can also indicate a frozen coil or a refrigerant issue. A well-maintained quality split system should last 12-15 years. Annual servicing and regular filter cleaning significantly extend the lifespan. The compressor is usually the first major component to fail – once it goes on a system over 10 years old, replacement is typically more cost-effective than repair.
