Winter AC Maintenance: Why You Need a Service Before Summer (Even Though It's Cold Now)

It's May. It's cold. Your air conditioner's not running. So why should you service it now? Because come December when it's 35 degrees and your system dies, you'll be waiting three weeks for a technician while your family melts inside the house.

Winter is actually the best time to get your air con serviced. Here's why.

Your System Doesn't Hibernate

Even in winter, your AC is still doing work. If you've got a system that heats and cools (like a split system or ducted multi-head), it's probably running your heating right now. That means refrigerant's circulating, compressors are cycling, and components are working.

Servicing in winter lets us catch problems early — before summer demands hit and your system's under stress 24/7.

The Capacitor Problem

One of the most common winter failures we see is a dead fan capacitor. It's a small cylindrical component on your outdoor unit that acts like a battery for your fan motor. When it fails, the fan stops spinning even though the compressor keeps running. Your system hums, nothing cools, and you're stuck.

A capacitor lasts about 10-15 years, but they fail faster if you're not running your system regularly. A winter service catches this before summer arrives.

Refrigerant Leaks Show Up Faster

Refrigerant leaks are sneaky. They get worse gradually. But in winter, when you're actually using your system for heating, a leak becomes obvious — your system won't reach temperature, it cycles on and off constantly, and energy bills spike.

Service it now and we can fix the leak while you've got time. Ignore it and come summer, you're without cooling when you need it most.

Dust and Blockages Build Up

Your outdoor condenser unit sits outside year-round. Winter brings leaves, dirt, dust, and grime. If your filters aren't changed regularly, indoor dust builds up. Come summer, your system's working twice as hard to push air through clogged filters.

A service includes cleaning your coils, checking filters, and clearing blockages. Five minutes of maintenance in May saves you two grand in emergency calls in December.

How Often Should You Service?

At least once a year. If you've got a system that does both heating and cooling (most of you do), service it in winter. The unit's running, we can test both functions, and we're not in the Christmas rush.

What We Check

When we service your system, we're looking at refrigerant pressure, electrical connections, thermostat settings, filter condition, and fan operation. We'll test heating mode, cooling mode, and everything in between. Takes about an hour. Costs less than an emergency callout. Saves you the stress.

Don't Wait

Summer always sneaks up. One day it's May, next thing you know it's December and you're calling every air con company in Sydney trying to get someone out within a week. By then you're paying premium rates and waiting in a queue.

Get your system serviced now. It's winter, we've got time, and you'll sleep better knowing your AC's ready for summer.
